13 Signs You Genuinely Love What You Do

“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”

- Confucius

What keeps you coming to work everyday?

Is it the people, the pay, the perks...or do you just genuinely love what you do? While most set out to find their “dream job,” not everyone does. Some people accept the first job offered to them and others choose a job because of the title or the paycheck.

But why choose a career you’re not absolutely, insanely, out-of-this-world passionate about it? Not only will you be unhappy, but you’ll also be less productive, less motivated and completely unfulfilled.

At Hello Innovation, we believe a career is more than a job. It’s a journey to find your life’s purpose. It’s a path that helps you find out how you can make your dent. How do you know you’re on the right path?

Here are 13 ways to tell if you genuinely love what you do:

1. You always want to learn more.

You’ve got your Google Alerts set for every word related to your industry. And whether it’s a conference across the country, a new book, a webinar or an industry report, you’re always craving more. You want to be the f*cking best at what you do. And knowledge is power, baby.

2. Your co-workers are your great friends.

Whoever said you shouldn’t be friends with your co-workers must have a pretty boring work day. You recognize that people and company culture are the pillars of an organization’s success. And that’s why you only hire (and keep around) people who are not only amazing at what they do, but enjoyable to be around. Not only does it make work more fun, but it makes your team stronger when you can kick back and enjoy each other’s company.

3. You actually enjoy meetings.

You know that when your team comes together to talk about a new project, client, or idea, that’s when the magic happens. You get totally geeked about putting everyone’s brain power together, and you leave feeling so inspired that you could run around the block at least five times.

4. Time is always flying by.

Why? Because you’re having fun, damn it. And when you’re having fun, you don’t need to look at the clock and count down the hours until 5pm. Instead, you’re too busy making shit happen to pay attention to the clock.

5. You go above and beyond without anyone asking you to.

If your manager asks you to come up with an idea, you hand them a strategic project canvas, a design direction mood board, ten pages of research and a list of people who can help get the job done... that same day. You do way more than what’s asked because it’s who you are. No questions, direction or training manual needed.

6. Success isn’t about the money.

It’s not about the dollar signs for you. Nope. It’s all about the gratification of knowing you did the best damn work of your life, and it actually made a difference in the world.

7. Writing your to-do list excites you.

As you write out your tasks for the day, you can’t wait to tackle them. Instead of getting the “fun stuff” out of the way, you see every item as a fun thing. Even if it’s something that most people see as mundane, you make it fun by putting your headphones in and jamming out to your favorite song while tackling it.

8. You love being the first person in the office.

Why? Because, it gives you more time to drink your cup of joe, read up on the latest trends and set your game-plan for the day. Sure, it doesn’t always happen. But when it does, it puts you in an amazing mood because you’re starting your day off right.

9. You find yourself talking about work... all the time.

And your friends make fun of you for it. You can’t help it that you’re so proud of your design team’s latest product re-design or the website you just launched. It doesn’t really matter if anyone’s listening, either.

10. People around the office TRULY count on you.

You hold a lot of responsibilities around your workplace, and you’re OK with that. And when you’re not there to help, your co-workers really need you.

11. You’re always helping without even thinking.

Your CEO needs someone to put together a Christmas party? You’re on it! The sales team needs some help writing a presentation for a big pitch tomorrow? No problemo! The success of your team is truly important to you, so if it means putting in an extra hour or two a week, you’re more than willing to help.

12. You’re a lean, mean idea generating machine.

Often times you find yourself jumping out of bed in the middle of the night to write down a new idea you have for your workplace. And the next day, you’ll get into work early just to pitch it to your boss. The ideas never stop. In fact, you have so many, you keep a journal with all of them in it. You never know when one of them will come in handy in the future!

13. Your job isn’t “just a job.”

Your job is who you are. It’s what gets you out of bed every morning. It’s what you're truly passionate about. You don’t just feel “free” when you leave work, you feel free when you get to work in the morning. Why? Because you didn’t sacrifice anything when you chose this job... you chose it because it’s what you love to do. And you wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.
